Toxoplasma gondii

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular coccidian parasite.this is the most common parasite found in a variety of hosts. The parasite was first discovered in spleen and liver smeras of a small north american rodent called Gondii(ctenodactylus gundi). The word Toxoplasma is derived fom the word TOXON which means arc or bow reffering to the curved shape of the trophozoite.

MORPHOLOGY

There are 3 forms namelyTrophozoites,Tissue cyst and oocyst.the former two represents the asexual phase whereas the latter one represents sexual phase

TROPHOZOITE

This intracellular form is seen mostly in the acute phase of infection.they can invade any nucleated cell and replicate within the cytoplasmic vacuoles by a process called endodyogeny.Rapidly proliferating trophozoites are called tachyzoites.sometimes,a proliferating trophozoite within a cell may appear rounded and closed in a membrane resembling pseudocyst.the trophozoites are seen under giemsa stain.
