Receptors of the heart

Think: "2 Beautiful hearts Marry 2 B1"

  • B receptor (adrenergic)
  • M receptor (cholinergic) and
  • B receptor (adrenergic)

(B1 receptors are present in heart and JG cells of the kidney and B2 receptors in heart and smooth muscles.)

imageThe heart is innervated by both sympathetic (adrenergic) and parasympathetic (cholinergic) fibres.
imageAdrenergic nerves from cervical sympathetic chain exerts positive ionotropic (contractility) and chronotropic (heart rate) effects on heart through B1 receptors.
imageB2 receptors are more in smooth muscles of vessel walls and thus mediate vasodilatation.
imageParasympathetic fibres which reach the heart through the vagus nerves have inhibitory effect on the heart through M2 receptors and is responsible for decreasing heart rate, conduction (dromotropic) and contractility.
