Frequently Asked Questions

What is content optimization?

At LifeHugger, 'content optimization' is often about making small modifications to parts of the available content or updating outdated content. When viewed individually, these changes might seem like incremental improvements, but when combined with other optimizations, they could have a noticeable impact on the site's user experience. Editors of the optimization team scan through published content and make changes where vital to keep the information updated. The changes will be made when necessary and  the original contributor will be notified of all significant changes.

What rules govern content optimization?

The content optimization at Lifehugger.com is a constructive process and adheres to specific guidelines.

  • Content alterations, if any, will be conveyed to the respective publishers.
  • The author/publisher of the original content will not be changed during optimization.
  • Members can suggest improvements on any content using its 'Talk' page.
  • 'Site editor/s' refer to the member/s of the current panel of editors for Lifehugger.com.

Each content type is published under different copyright licenses and have different rules of optimization.

  • Mnemonics: All mnemonics on the website can be improved and expanded. The editors can modify mnemonics as and when found necessary. This is mostly based on comments received for the mnemonic on its 'Talk' page. Editors add a new mnemonic as an 'Alternate mnemonic' or replace an old mnemonic if the new one is finer. The old mnemonic will be added to the 'Talk' page for reference.
  • Slideshows: The powerpoints are optimized by the moderators at the initial review and the animation, layout and effects on the slides will be streamlined for better user experience. The information on the slides is not modified by the editors in most cases. The author can upload an updated version of his powerpoint anytime and place a comment in its 'Talk' page so that the slideshow can be synchronized with the new powerpoint. Also, on the 'Talk' page, registered users can suggest amendments, upload images or slides which can improve the slideshow. The changes will be made to the next fortnightly release of the slideshow. The renovations help to keep up with the recent advances. Maintainers for a slideshow, if required, are chosen from graduates who have contributed to the optimization.
  • Images: These generally require no alteration and if any modification of the textual description of an Image is necessary it may be done by the site editors.
  • Wiki pages: As of now, only the site editors can create or modify the wiki pages.

You can contact Lifehugger with any questions or comments about the guidelines.

I get a 'You are missing some Flash content that should appear here' message.

'You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialise correctly. Sorry, for the inconvenience.'

This notice appears on lifehugger pages containing 'flash' elements when there is no flash player installed on your system. A flash player is required to view podcasts, powerpoints and videos on lifehugger. Once any flash player is installed, the message will be replaced by the flash element/s available on the specific page. Get the latest version of the adobe flash player here.

I cannot add content; the editor panel appears blank.

If you are seeing no editor panel  (the long board with controls for adding styles like boldface, italics etc. to content) in the content creation form it is probably because you are using an old version of Internet Explorer to access Lifehugger.com. In most cases the editor panel will appear by simply 'Refresh'ing the page. If you're still having problems after following the above steps, please click here.
